Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract The kinetics of uptake of gaseous N 2 O 5 on submicron aerosols containing NaCl and natural sea salt has been investigated in a flow reactor as a function of relative humidity (RH) in the range 30–80% at 295±2 K and a total pressure of 1 bar. The measured uptake coefficients, γ, were larger on the aerosols containing sea salt compared to those 5 of pure NaCl, and in both cases increased with increasing RH. These observations are explained in terms of the variation in water content and hence size of the salt droplets, which leads to a limitation in the uptake rate into small particles. After correction for this effect the uptake coefficients are independent of relative humidity, and agree with those measured previously on larger droplets. A value of γ=0.025 is recommended for 10 the reactive uptake coefficient for N 2 O 5 on deliquesced sea salt droplets at 298 K and RH >40%.

Heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on secondary organic aerosol surfaces: A possible source of nitrous acid (HONO) in the atmosphere?

The heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on different secondary organic aerosols (SOA) was investigated with the focus on a possible formation of nitrous acid (HONO). In one set of experiments different organic aerosols were produced in the reactions of O3 with α-pinene, limonene or catechol and OH radicals with toluene or limonene, respectively. The aerosols were sampled on filters and exposed to h...

OH-initiated oxidation of sub-micron unsaturated fatty acid particles.

The heterogeneous reaction of OH radicals with sub-micron unsaturated fatty acid particles in the presence of H2O2 and O2 is studied to explore how surface OH addition reactions initiate chain reactions that rapidly transform the chemical composition of an organic particle. In the presence of 20.7 ppm [H2O2] in a 10% mixture of O2 in N2, the effective uptake coefficients of oleic acid, linoleic...

Reversible and irreversible processing of biogenic olefins on acidic aerosols

Recent evidence has suggested that heterogeneous chemistry of oxygenated hydrocarbons, primarily carbonyls, plays a role in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA); however, evidence is emerging that direct uptake of alkenes on acidic aerosols does occur and can contribute to SOA formation. In the present study, significant uptake of monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterp...

Heterogeneous reactions of gaseous HNO3 and NO2 on the clay minerals kaolinite and pyrophyllite.

Airborne clay mineral particles have long atmospheric lifetimes due to their relatively small size. To assess their impact on trace atmospheric gases, we investigated heterogeneous reactions on prototype clay minerals. Diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy identified surface-adsorbed products formed from the uptake of gaseous nitric acid and nitrogen dioxide on kaolinite and pyrophyllite. F...
